After looking through the vines and other resources I discovered that to rest is to be still, to be quiet, and to have peace.
Psalm 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!
Being quiet is more than just not speaking, it is to quiet our soul – to quieten our mind, will and emotions.
Psalm 131:2 Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul, Like a weaned child with his mother; Like a weaned child is my soul within me.
Rest for our souls is found in obedience to God’s word, not deviating from His word. We need to be like the Bereans and search the scriptures, we are not called to blindly follow leaders who are not walking in the old paths. God’s word has not changed.
Jeremiah 6:16 Thus says the Lord: “Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
If we keep our minds on things above and set our eyes on Jesus we will be kept in perfect peace.
Isaiah 26:3 You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.
